Super Happy Music!

Bubbly happy music for bubbly happy days in the sunshine. Like with Royksopp’s “Only this Moment”, just press play and your mood will automatically ratchet up a few notches.

Annie Makin’ Pop Dance Jams Again

Gazelle Twin – Mammal

Elizabeth Walling’s delicate murmur, so resonant with emotion, paired with a team of heavyweight producers (Clint Mansell, Kuedo) creates one haunting EP that is part 80s dystopia soundtrack part gothic angel pop (ok and just a hint Evanescence). Perfect for those winter dips.

Happy February.

Learned this while on vacation last week and freaked the fuck out. Shaking the Habitual coming soon! This expansive first release “Full of Fire” is a promising array of dissonance and menace. Also the Knife will be touring Europe this summer! OK I declare – 2013 is the year I finally take my music pilgrimage. After all I am going to be 25 in May and I would like to celebrate a quarter century of musical love.

Susanne Sundfor + Royksopp + Depeche Mode = My Norwegian Dream

Maybe you’re stressed because you have to get in a lot of projects at work and/or school (for me it’s both) before winter “break.” Maybe you have to expend all your energy on trying to not spontaneously combust – Being sane is full-time work. But you put on your headphones, the music explodes like fireworks in your head and you remember that life is full of beauty. And somewhere in a TV studio in Norway THIS IS HAPPENING and yes, it is all very good.

Obsessed: Kid Koala – 12 Bit Blues

Holy Shit. A Chinese-Canadian turntablist DJ goes nuts with an sampler, producing an album that is blues crossed with old school hip hop. A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN… AMURRICAN HEAVEN. Favorite song is easily the thumpin, hook-y “2 bit blues”. Then, “8 bit Blues (Chicago to LA to NY)”, a modern version of the classic road song, which crisscrosses the country, landing in my three favorite area codes: 212, 213, 312. The above video was made in one shot with no editing.

Spin has also got Kid Koala’s breakdown of each song on 12 Bit Blues.

Bonus: if you buy the album you get an actually functional CARDBOARD GRAMOPHONE.

Tame Impala’s Lonerism out next week

Tame Impala Lonerism

Stereogum has got Tame Impala’s new album Lonerism to stream, out October 9th on Modular. I don’t talk about Australian bands enough here, but Australia is my #2 favorite indie music country, for reasons like Tame Impala. Lonerism is a swirly psychedelic trip, yet an exuberant and melodic one.
